Chapter 16

Ihad a rule of never texting while driving but I disregarded that as I rushed home. Texting Nyxie, I told her to make sure the front gate was locked and to be on the watch for any intruders. It’d take me less than ten minutes to get back to the B&B, but I was feeling paranoid—better safe than sorry.

I also texted Agent Handler. She didn’t respond right away. While it was unlikely that LuxCorp’s Regional Procurement Manager would make a move right after introducing herself, I wouldn’t risk Starshine or Nyxie’s safety. Dina Lee seemed like a loose cannon, likely to do whatever she wanted to complete her assignment.

Pulling up to the B&B’s driveway, I scanned the area for a black Silverado or any other unexpected visitors, but we appeared to be in the clear. I unlocked the gate and let myself in, then immediately hopped out of my car to secure it once more before hurrying back to my vehicle.

“Can’t be too careful,” I murmured to myself.

A LuxCorp agent could legally argue that an open gate was an open invitation. I already was thinking about getting No Trespassing and Invited Guests Only signs.

Not that a gate or fence would stop someone determined to get inside. I wondered if I could talk Starshine into growing some briar or thorny vines along the property line. Maybe if they were roses?

“Dina Lee Paulsen, huh?” I muttered, shaking my head in disgust.

I doubted that was her real name, but I’d still Google it and do some further digging into LuxCorp. There was no way I would risk the idyllic life I was on the cusp of obtaining—a dream-like existence where I had the perfect career and an amazing relationship. And Nyxie had made it clear that life was only going to get more interesting with the inclusion of Starshine Twinkle.

I parked the truck and walked inside. Nyxie and Starshine were in the dining room; apparently, the Alicorn had decided to serve some tea. I had no idea where she had found such a fancy-looking tea set, but I could see how anxious the Hellhound was. Nyxie’s tail was held low and she kept tapping her heel against the floor.

The curtains along the windows were drawn back, giving a good view of the driveway and the front approach toward the B&B. The way Nyxie kept glancing out the windows, I was sure she had been keeping vigilant watch.

The pair instantly rose to their feet when they spied me, but I held up a hand.

“No, sit,” I said. “I’ll join you.”

Starshine carefully lifted the teapot and poured me a steaming cup. She was acting calm and collected, but I couldn’t help but notice a tremble in her hand. Taking my seat, I grabbed my laptop, which was nearby, but I held off on opening it. Instead, I looked seriously at both girls and forced a smile.

“I’m glad you got my message, Nyxie,” I began.

Taking a sip of tea—mint with a bit too much sugar—I quickly recounted my encounter with Dina Lee.
